IMPACT OF ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS ON PUBLIC DISSENT IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Economic hardships often catalyze public dissent, as seen in the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. Triggered by severe economic difficulties such as high inflation, unemployment, and rising costs of living, the protests became a powerful expression of public frustration and demand for change (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024). This case study explores how economic adversity influenced the intensity and scope of the protests and shaped the public's response to governance issues.

The EndBadGovernance protests, which began in 2024, were marked by widespread demonstrations against the Nigerian government's handling of economic issues. Protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with the government's failure to address economic inequalities and improve living conditions. The role of economic hardships in fueling public dissent is critical for understanding the dynamics of the protest movement and the relationship between economic conditions and social unrest (Premium Times, 2024; Punchng, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The impact of economic hardships on public dissent during the EndBadGovernance protests needs further exploration. While economic challenges are often cited as reasons for unrest, the specific ways in which these hardships influence protest dynamics and public responses are not well-documented. This study aims to investigate how economic difficulties contributed to the emergence and intensity of the protests and to understand their impact on public dissent and governance challenges (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).

The central problem is to analyze how economic hardships shaped the nature of the EndBadGovernance protests and to assess the implications for governance and public policy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between economic hardships and the emergence of the EndBadGovernance protests.
  2. To assess how economic conditions influenced the intensity and scope of public dissent during the protests.
  3. To evaluate the impact of economic hardships on public perceptions of governance and policy effectiveness.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How did economic hardships contribute to the emergence and growth of the EndBadGovernance protests?
  2. In what ways did economic conditions affect the intensity and scope of public dissent during the protests?
  3. What was the impact of economic hardships on public perceptions of governance and policy responses during the EndBadGovernance protests?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of economic conditions in shaping public dissent and protest movements. Understanding the link between economic hardships and public protests can help policymakers and researchers address the root causes of social unrest and develop more effective responses to economic and governance challenges.

Additionally, the findings will contribute to the broader field of social movement studies by highlighting the influence of economic factors on protest dynamics and public opinion. This knowledge can inform strategies for managing social unrest and improving governance in economically distressed contexts.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of economic hardships on the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, specifically examining the period from 2024. It will cover aspects such as economic conditions, public dissent, and perceptions of governance during the protests. The scope is limited to the immediate effects of economic hardships on the protest movement and may not address long-term consequences or other factors influencing public dissent.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
